Let There Be Baker's Twine

I can't wait for all my Open House Party guests to see my newly 'updated' look in my studio.  I've painted all my storage units (for inks and punches, etc.) and added some great fun with some blues and greens.  I love it!  One of the fun, new additions is a holder for my Baker's Twine.

This holder was originally designed to hold K-cups.  I ordered it to hold my Washi Tape, but somehow ended up thinking it was cuter with my Baker's Twine.
Isn't this adorable?!!!  Everything in my studio has to meet several of my criteria or it just plain doesn't get to play.  It must be:
1.  Cute
2.  Functional
3.  Handy
4.  Fun
If you're looking for a fun way to spruce up your crafting space, think outside the box.  Look for unique ways to store and display your stash.  It's fun and makes your creative space just that much more inspiring ... to get your creative juices flowing.

Oh, yes I did!

If you remember my new storage system I went to recently for storing my Thinlits and Framelits, then you know that I showed you a blank canvas, as far as the container goes.  If you know me at all, you know I could not leave it at that.  I just love taking some cute old thing, like a sewing drawer, and making it pretty... fun AND functional.  Would you like to see what I did next with my little sewing drawer?
I cut large pieces of black CS and cut the top edges to look like file folder tabs, using the Envelope Punch Board.  I typed a sheet for the labels I wanted and then just punched them out with the Scallop Oval punch.  All the dividers have coordinating designs from the Modern Medley DSP.  I decided to keep the front all polka dots.  My cute little box now sits out on my bar, close to my Big Shot, with all my Thinlits and Framelits within easy reach.  This was a fun project and my box has turned out to be super handy.
I've been kind of crazy about collecting Scrabble tiles for a long time now, so I have several jars full of them.  I thought it would be fun to use them to label my box.  I like to decorate in a way that I can change down the road, if I decide to update it again, so I did not want to affix my tiles to the front of the drawer directly.  Instead, I chose to cover a piece of black CS with DSP and attach the tiles to that.  I scored the 'sign' in 2 places at the top and cut the back flap just slightly shorter, which allows it to hang over the edge of my box.  It literally sits on the front edge of my box.  I like it!
TIPS:
I got my 'cards' for storing my Thinlits and Framelits from Stamp-N-Storage.  They have TWO sizes of cards.  Mine are the larger size.  I have several sizes of old sewing machine drawers (Yes, I know... I have a 'thing' about boxes, too:) and this is a longer drawer.  You need a longer one to be able to have TWO rows of cards stored in it.

For storing my embossing folders, most any size of sewing drawer will hold two rows of folders, easily.  These are also handy being stored this way because they are so easily accessible.  I do not like clutter and mess (even though I create a lot when I'm working) because it gets in the way of my creativity, but I do like to have things handy.  You never know when you might walk by them and be struck by a super creative idea!

WARNING:
Sometimes, often late at night (I am a night owl!) a little voice gets into my head and whispers:  "What if we just tweaked this a bit over here?"  Whenever that happens, the next thing I know, I find myself 'upgrading' my organization in my studio.  This happened last night and I ended up with an amazingly improved work area behind the bar where I stamp.  This means... you will be seeing some new shots of my studio soon.  If this gets that little voice whispering inside your head too, well... you have been warned.  You're on your own.

Thanks for stopping by my little corner of the blog world.  Have a great day.  Come back soon for more creative inspiration.

Storage Tips: Framelits and Embellishments

Today's post is dedicated to my daughter, Jenn and it's all about getting organized ... with your framelits.
As you know, yesterday was Day 3 of my Work Like a Dog mission.  I accomplished so much that I want to keep going.
Something amazing has happened to my calendar and I find myself with 3 more days open, so I will continue my mission for 3 more days.
By Sunday, I'll need a good rest.  I marked off a lot of entries on my To Do list yesterday, including getting all my Framelits organized.

So, before I begin Day 4 of my Work Like a Dog mission, I'll share with you what I did.

Want to see?  But wait!!!  Before I go any further, I want to give a big thank you to my daughter, Jennifer, for designing all these cases.  I truly did not have time to deal with it right now and my storage needed help.  I told her what I needed and she took it from there.  She is a creative and wonderful person.  Thanks, Jenn!!!

OK, Here you go!  Aren't these great?  I love them!

To organize your framelits:
  • Talk someone sweet into designing case inserts for you because you've been too busy to do it yourself.
  • Have that sweet someone design them on MDS.
  • Order them through our print services.
  • Trim new inserts to fit the cases.
  • Insert inside the plastic covering on the cases.
  • Step back and enjoy ... and notice that you really have a lot of framelits:)
  • Put them away.
It will be easy to find the one you want now without having to look through every case to do it.

Tip:
I ran out of our retired Magnetic Sheets so, at the suggestion of one of my customers, I used magnets from an office supply store that were designed for business cards.  There's much less trimming to do to fit inside the cases.  Thanks for the tip, Marsha!

I wanted a way to label the cases I use for embellishments, so I had Jenn design a case insert with a place to write a different title on each one.  I store my pearls, rhinestones, paper daisies, shaker frames, etc. in these cases.  It's nice to have them all contained in easy-to-store cases.

To design each case, Jenn had to create the shapes of the framelits using various punches in the MDS program.  She put in a lot of work on this project!!!

Look closely on the case above and you'll see that the arrow is pointing to a portion of the largest framelit that is actually extending outside the storage case.  The reason for this is that the largest framelit wouldn't otherwise fit inside the case.

Jenn had my son-in-law cut an opening in the side of the case to accommodate the largest framelit.  I store my cases upright (like books) in a cabinet and there is a ton of room behind the cases, so it doesn't hurt it any to hang out a bit.

So, while I'm off to continue Day 4 of my Work Like a Dog mission, I hope I've inspired you to get busy and design something, create something, or organize something.  Oh, and in case you're wondering, I get like this every Spring.  I'm like Wonder Woman on crack --- or, in my case, lots of Diet Coke.  I know... I need to stop drinking so much of it.

Look what my husband gave me!!!

If you know me at all, you know I love mixing antiques, unique containers ... boxes ... all kinds of fun stuff ... in with my home decor.  This is what my husband gave me for Valentine's Day.  I love it!

He labeled each drawer!  A while back, I had admired this in an antique store and he went back and got it for me.  The label on the bottom right says Macon County (our county) so it has local history.

Here's how I will use it ... for additional ribbon storage.  I have lots of ribbon!!!  The card catalog is in quite good condition, so it will be quite functional as I enjoy it:)   I see in the photo that I forgot to open one of the drawers before I snapped the picture, but it has ribbon in it too, of course.
Perhaps this drawer unit will inspire you to try some new ways to organize supplies in your studio.
