What have I been up to lately?

Time flies when you're having fun, or so they say.  Time certainly is passing way too quickly as I continue to revamp and update all my stamping and crafting goodies.  This past week, I tackled my many, many, many ribbons ... and many, many, many embellishments.  I do love ribbons ... and embellishments.  I'm happy to report that they are all in proper order and I'm pleased with how they will always be handy to grab when I need them.  Out of sight; out of mind leads to an almost hoarding situation.  I like everything where I can see and use it, and yet neat and tidy.  Check it out here.  ... neat, tidy, and always easy to find.

Next up ... I'm tackling all my dies.  This job will be major.  I love, for some strange reason, to clean and organize my art studio.  It makes me happy and keeps me happy.  Also, being as I'm still pretty far away from feeling 100% health wise, doing tasks like these keep me working on building my strength because I can stop for a rest break at any time.  I'm also working on a swatch book showing every color of our wonderful Stampin' Blends.  I'm half-way finished with it and it's looking good!  Coloring is always excellent as a relaxation therapy.  My Brusho swatch book is a work in progress as I just keep adding pages to it as I discover additional techniques.  Those who earn the free Brusho class will get to create their own swatch book.  It's a super handy reference for reviewing techniques.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Crafters ... a Review and a Confession

I was looking back at some old posts from this blog and ran across this one from May 8, 2014.  I was a little ashamed to see that I was neglecting a couple of these ... quite badly.  As we progress our way through the new year, what better time to review some of these ideas and see if I can do even better.  Won't you come along with me?
First of all, let's get my confession out of the way.  I love to organize!  You'd never know it when I'm in a real creative frenzy, because I end up with only a foot or so of work space.  However, the basic need and love to organize keeps these creative frenzies from becoming a disaster.  So... it works and works well for me.
So, let's review these habits and get going on them.
Are you a crafter... a creator of beautiful objects... a designer... a dreamer... ?
Come on in and let me help you to be more successful.

First of all, I guess we should address what it means to be a successful crafter.  To me, it means creating beautiful cards, projects, decor, gifts, and scrapbook pages...  AND completing, using and enjoying them.  Half-finished and/or tossed aside projects do not promote a feeling of being very successful.  You think you'll get back to them, but do you really?  You truly do want to be successful at crafting.

So, how can you do it?  No one has the perfect answer for you, but I can try to share what I think works best for me.  I've come down a long road of trial and error to reach the place where I am now in my studio.  I've paved the way for you a little bit!  It's up to you to take what will work for you and use it to be at your best.
So, let's get started.
1.
Be clean, neat, and organized.
Oh dear!!!  I started out with a real challenge for (you) us all!  Of course it will get messy.  Just be sure to clean before and after each major creative time.  When you have a clean place in which to work and can find everything, you'll be happier ... AND... You'll greatly increase your creativity.
2.
Constantly tweak your creative space.
Keep it working for you.  Make small changes at a time.  Our interests and the products we use are constantly changing and this causes a constant need to tweak areas to KEEP them working for us.
3.
Make your creative space a fun place.
Keep it fresh and keep it fun.  Create a space in which it is fun to work.   No matter how large or small your space is, make it a fun place in which to be at your creative best.  Incorporate fun with function.
A happy work space is a more creative work space.  Keeping an embellishment in a container that you really love, can make it more fun to be in your work space.  Don't get carried away and add items that have no purpose other than to (Admit it!) just be in your way.  Enjoy those items somewhere else in your home.  I like to switch out little items from time to time throughout my entire home, including my studio.  It keeps it all feeling fresh, fun and new.
4.
Manage your time.
What could you make in the same amount of time that you spend looking at what someone else has created?  Check a few resources as your 'creative warm-up' and then get going and do your own thing!
5.
Be willing to try new designs and new techniques.
Use the internet as a resource guide.  By not spending all morning looking at what everyone else has made, you now have time to focus on just a few good resources that are of the most interest and the most help for you.  It may be a new design, new sketch, or whatever catches your interest and inspires you.
6.
Keep an inspiration board or display.
Put it where you'll readily see it, to jump start your creativity.  Have you made projects that you've kept because you really like them a lot?  Put them up where you can see them.  Use the same design with new papers, new stamps... you'll have a brand new take on it all.  Do you have a small space?  Keep up just 1 or 2 items at a time for inspiration.

7.
If it isn't fun, don't do it!
Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort range (trying new techniques or designs), but stay true to what you love.  I tried origami ... once or twice ... and it does not like me.  Therefore, I do not like it much, either.  I'll leave that to someone else.  I love making cards, projects and scrapbook pages, but I'm not afraid to try new designs and/or techniques to make them.  Trying a new technique, style or design can really energize your creativity.

... and 3 more ideas, in case 7 weren't enough:
8.
Keep a creative journal.
In it, keep a record of color stories, designs and/or techniques that you really like to do.  You can use these ideas on future creations.  Keep lists of ideas that you want to try later.  Add sketches for projects, cards and/or layouts that you want to try.  Write it down, so you won't forget!  You can even add actual photos (from magazines or catalogs) that have inspiring color stories.  Jot down the Stampin' Up! colors that you'll use for this color story,  Look all around you for inspiration.  I often see color stories in catalogs or magazines that I really like.  I keep track of them in my journal, so I can try them later.  I actually keep at least 4 active journals going all the time.  Keeping things written down keeps me on track and keeps me from forgetting important plans and ideas.  For special technique tutorials, I bookmark them on my laptop.
My 4 journals are:
--- a color story journal... for samples of color combinations that I like
--- a business journal... for ideas, dreams and plans for my classes and my business
--- an inspiration journal... for ideas I want to try... for cards, layouts and projects
--- journaling ideas... funny things the kids say and do, for scrapbooking later
9.
Create.  Don't hoard.
Do you collect supplies and products and hoard them or do you actually use them to create?  Be a creator, not a hoarder.  If you're not using them at all (for whatever reason), pass them along to someone else who may just enjoy AND actually use them.  You don't want to end up on that TV show, now... do you?
10.
Go in the direction your creativity leads you.
Believe it or not, I often dream designs for cards, projects and/or scrapbook layouts.  When I have these inspirations, I go with them.  If I don't, they kind of stay in my mind and block my creativity for going a different direction.  I need to just stop and go in the direction that my mind is leading my creativity and then I'm free to move on to something else.  Give it a try!  You'll be amazed at how much fun (and successful) this can be!

Get going now and good luck!

Chick Talk and Stamp Organization

I'm going to take a couple of days to say goodbye to our SAB chicks.  I think they're sooooo cute!  They may have to move into my 'keep for a while longer' pile of stamps.  This was a super chaotic week in my studio.  I pulled out every single stamp and stacked them in piles on my studio table.  Then I pulled out all the retiring stamps and put them into banker boxes for future sales days.  Then, I referred to the new catalog online (on our Demonstrators' website) and reorganized the remaining stamps into the new catalog categories.

I organize my stamps according to the table of contents categories in the catalog.  Then I number the back of each set.  This is super important.  After a busy class, which involves having out many, many stamp sets, I stack them all behind the bar (where I store them) and put them away quickly, using the numbers I've written on the back of each.  I keep them in large baskets and boxes in pull-out drawers in the lower cabinets -- very handy.  When a new catalog comes out, I can change any numbers that need a new number to align with the latest catalog.  It use an alcohol wipe and then I dry it with a paper towel, so I can add the new number with a black Sharpie.

When my catalog preorder comes in this week, the first thing I'll do is to get the numbers onto the new stamp sets.  They won't be put away right then though, because I'll want to start working with them right away:)

Now, let's say goodbye to two of our cute little chicks.
Don't ask where I got the wonderful chicken wire background stamp because I can't find a label on it and I don't remember.  I bought it a long, long, long time ago (before I'd even heard of Stampin' Up!) and knew I should keep it for a future project.  It was perfect for this one.
I love the little egg, too!
I think these two chicks are in deep conversation.  I hope they're not going to gossip or plan an attempted escape!
Goodbye for now, cute little chicks.  We'll say goodbye to one more chick in my next post and then we'll move on.  The creative fun just never ends!

Helpful Organizational Tip

Would you like to learn a quick tip for helping you to work more efficiently in creating your beautiful projects?  Then read on, because that's just what I have for you today.  As you've seen in some of my previous posts, I like to keep my creative space a fun AND functional place to work.  I do everything I can possibly do to make my creative space a fun place to be and a place where I am surrounded by things I love... things that I enjoy seeing, things that inspire creative ideas, and things that help me in my work.  My latest antique find has proven to be at the top of my list since I got it, cleaned it up and put it into immediate use.  Check it out!
I love and adore this and now I wonder how I got along without it.  Each section is full of little goodies that I am using in my current projects.  Then... whenever I punch little flowers or butterflies, I punch a few extra pieces.  When I need to finish something quickly or realize a creation needs 'a little something more' I can look into my little gizmo and usually find just the right thing to finish my project.
Tip:
Sometimes I have extra stamped pieces.  I keep these in a stamp box for when I need something 'right now' on a project.  It is super helpful.
If you like vintage finds like this one, go looking for items you can use in your creative space.  Let me know if you find something really good!
