Meet My 2 Fancy New Journals

Once I started eating and living more responsibly, for a healthier life, I learned how journaling can be a powerful tool in staying successful in your journey.  I believe that this is a journey that never really ends, you just make a lot of stops along the way and ... how you live determines how much fun those experiences can be.  I've always thought that journaling should be an important part of your life, but I cannot tell you how many times I've cleaned out drawers, bookcases and shelves only to find many, many journals that I started ... and ... that was it ... only a start.
A good friend suggested that I combine my love of art into my journals.  Wow!  What a fabulous idea.  Now, I've started and actually filled up many, many journals.  Journaling has become an important part of my life ... and I need a great journal to do it.  Here are the last 2 journals I recently finished.  I love them!

This first journal cover is one that I made up as I went along.  I couldn't tell you how to do it, even if my life depended on it.  It involves a bit of Pearl X Powders and a lot of gold embossing powder, with a bit of stamping at the end of the process.  As I heated the embossing powder, I kept adding more powder, a pinch at a time.  It was an incredibly messy and wonderfully fun project.
The inside pages are edged with paints and/or watercolors, with random stamping throughout the journal pages.  By the way, I ordered my journals from Amazon.  They are called Dylusions Creative Journals.  These are a 5 X 8" size.  I've tried several sizes and like this size the best.
The pages in the journals are made from sturdy papers specifically designed for mixed media projects, so they are perfect for watercoloring and/or stamping.  You do not need to Gesso the pages before using them.
I added just a snippet of ribbon to the elastic closure on each of my journals.  I love how they turned out!
I loved the first one so much that I started out trying to recreate it for my second journal.  However, this time, the more embossing powder I added, the smoother it got.  (The first one is wonderfully bumpity.)
I soon came to my senses and realized that I couldn't recreate the first journal ... and ... why would I want two the same anyway?  So ... off to a new design plan.  Remember, these are 'make it up as you go along' journal covers.
After I'd finished all the embossing, I decided to use 2 of my favorite butterfly dies.  One die is designed to fit over the top of another.  It wasn't quite long enough, so I added 2 more to the lower part of the journal cover.  The larger die cut piece fit perfectly around the elastic closure.  I cut them from watercolor papers, to give more depth and texture.
TIP:
To adhere pieces like this, I make a puddle of glue on my craft mat and use a piece of sponge to dab the glue onto the die cut piece.
Once the glue was dry, I spritzed them with water and sprinkled on some Brusho.  I hadn't gotten my hands all colorful with Brusho for a while.  It was great!  I love and will always love Brusho.
After the Brusho dried, I embossed with clear embossing powder, to make sure the butterflies were secure, adding in a few pinches of gold embossing powder here and there.  I absolutely love the end result.  It will be hard to top this one, once it's full.  This was a messy, time-consuming project and well worth the effort.  I can enjoy this one for months to come!
It's amazing that you can start out in a similar way and end up with two completely different projects.
In the past, I created journals for several of my favorite journaling projects ... art, quotes, scriptures, funny sayings, inspirational ideas, daily tracking of eating and exercising ...  Now, I combine them all into one great journal.  This is a better system.  I mean, after all, how many journals can you juggle at one time?  I'll probably eventually convert the other partially started journals that have separate topics and areas of focus, all into one - like these.
Have you tried creating a journal, using art as a part of it ... or even a journal that is all art?  Give it a try.  I think you'll be glad you did.

Lovely Lattice with Brusho Card

I have 1 more Brusho card to share with you today.  This one uses an emboss resist technique with a stamp set from our past Sale-A-Bration --- Lovely Lattice.  Enjoy!  And don't forget ... 1 more week until the new catalog goes live!  I already know what I'll order next.
I did an emboss resist on the inside of the card, as well, and I added a bit of Brusho to the envelope to coordinate everything.
We won't have Brusho in the new Annual Catalog but we will have Pigment Sprinkles and they'll come in 6 Stampin' Up! colors --- Bermuda Bay, Daffodil Delight, Granny Apple Green, Gorgeous Grape, Mango Melody and Melon Mambo.  I think these colors are a perfect variety and will be a fabulous opportunity for producing even more creative projects.  I love that they have an inside lid with holes for easy sprinkling onto your project.
If you did not get a copy of the new catalog in the mail from me, I will have some here in my studio later this week that you can stop by and pick one up.
On a personal note ...
We had the privilege of attending the memorial service of a dear friend this weekend.  She raised a family that was the picture of a Norman Rockwell painting / Dick and Jane story book.  What an honor to have known her for so many years.  We lifted our voices in praise to God for letting us share in the life of such a fine Christian woman.  Besides her family, music was such an important part of her life and it was evident in the beautiful singing in which we shared with so many music lovers in attendance.  We were reminded to live our lives to the fullest and be the best example we can be for our family, friends and loved ones.  We'll miss her very much.

Dear Doily Brusho Card / 2 Versions

One thing I love about Brusho is that you can do the same technique but it always comes out a little different.  Here are two cards using the emboss resist technique.  Each background is different.  I especially like the one with a little touch of green.
You can emboss the images before or after the background on these cards.  The one on the left was embossed before creating the Brusho background and the one on the right was stamped after creating the Brusho background.
Which card do you like the best?

Brusho Watercoloring

I have a card to share with you today that uses Brusho for the watercoloring on my flower.  I also used a bit of Wink of Stella for some added sparkle.
If you haven't tried watercoloring yet, I hope you'll give it a try.  I find it very relaxing.  You can work on bits at a time and go back and add shading.
I stamped the flower onto Shimmery White CS so that it could take the watercoloring.  The added shimmer also looks very pretty.

Brusho and Spray Starch Butterfly Card / Tutorial

What do you get when you add a watercolored butterfly to a Brusho/spray starch technique?  You get a beautiful card ... for sure!  I love the blues and greens together.
Here's how you do it:
- Spray starch over Glossy White CS.
- Sprinkle on your choice of Brusho colors.
- Watch the beautiful bursts of color begin.
- Add more starch, if needed, to get the blend of colors you want.
- Cover your CS with plastic wrap and scrunch it up.
- Press it down and leave it for 30 minutes or so.
- Uncover the magic.
- Set aside to finish drying.
Note:
When you remove the plastic wrap, your CS will still be quite wet, so you can just leave it to air dry or heat set it.  I left mine overnight, to be sure everything was ready to be used for my card.  Sometimes, heat setting can move and change the color formations in a way you don't like as well.  If  you leave it to air dry, the CS will stay exactly as it looks when you first remove the plastic wrap.
I stamped my butterfly onto watercolor paper, heat embossed it with Gold EP and then watercolored it with Brusho mixed with water in my paint palette.  I did not add any sentiment at all on the front of my card.  I just wanted the butterfly and the beautiful background to be the stars of my card.  I hope you'll try this technique.  It's a lot of fun.

Butterflies Thinlits ... Two Card Designs

I love butterflies, almost as much as dragonflies.  Butterflies were a favorite of my mom's and I think of her every time I see one.  Today, I'm sharing two ways to use our beautiful thinlits.
One card has a watercolored background.  The other card has a very clean, simple background.
Both cards have butterflies that are cut from watercolor paper and watercolored with Brusho.
Which one do you like the best?

A Beautiful 'Hi' Card ... Times Three!

I have a card to share with you today that I just love ... but wait ... I have three cards!  The first is Gorgeous Grape, so what's not to love!
I added Wink of Stella to the letters.  I mixed up some Brusho to watercolor a little background behind the letters.
Now, take the piece from which you cut your letters and use it for a second card.
I love how you can see all the movement from the Brusho in the background.
The card on the left (below) was created in Bermuda Bay and was my inspiration for the Gorgeous Grape card.  I love them both!
Which card do you like the best?
