Hello, My Old Friend

As promised, today's card features an old friend that I brought back to play.  He's from our retired No Peeking stamp set.  We made this one at the Forsyth Library last Saturday.  When stamp sets retires, I usually give up as many as I can, but there are always a few that I just have to keep.  This is one of those sets.  I just loved it too much to say goodbye.
The penguin is on the inside of the card, with a punched circle window on the front so he can peek through.  I cut a separate strip for the embossed edge across the front of the card, to make it easier for any beginner stampers at the class.  I love the design on this embossing folder!  I think the perfect finishing touch was to give the little penguin some rosy cheeks:)
When I was asked to teach the holiday cards class at the library, the request was for winter cards that could be used by anyone wanting to make a card.  I designed the 3 cards to be used in a variety of ways.  These could be for a greeting for any winter occasion, even thank you notes or birthdays.  I took along a bunch of text stamps, so each person could choose what message they wanted to stamp inside their card.  Come back for my next post and I'll share the 3rd card we made.

Have a great day.  I hope you're getting all ready for Thanksgiving.  I will NOT be shopping on Thanksgiving Day or even the next day.  It's all family time for me and then back to stamping.  I have a big party to get ready to host on December 2, so I'll be spending the weekend changing out the remaining fall decor in my home and getting it to the totally Christmas stage.  I love doing it!  I like to make a lot of my own decor, so I'll be sharing some of my new projects several of my next posts.  Come on back and check it out.

Christmas With a Surprise

Look... it's an envelope... it's a card... it's both!  Today's card has a little surprise.  It's an envelope that, when you open it, reveals that it's an envelope and card all in one!  We'll be making this at my Friday Night Cards class.  I started with an 8 1/8" square and ended up with a 5 1/4" card (when closed).  Take a look:
Because you open it as a card, you do not seal any of the flaps on the card/envelope.  It is held together (when closed) with a belly band.    I love when you can use a product (such as our Envelope Punch Board) in a new and different way.

Additional ideas for my card/envelope idea:
  • You could place a gift card inside for an additional surprise.
  • Do you like to send a family newsletter at Christmas time?  It will easily fit inside my card/envelope --- just fold and tuck it inside.
  • Do you have kids who like to participate in Christmas activities?  Give them the square insert and have them make a picture.  You make the card/envelope and attach their complete picture inside it.
  • Do you like to scrapbook?  Treat the square insert as a little scrapbook page and add a family photo.  Your recipients will LOVE it!!!
  • Experiment with different sizes for your card/envelope and find stamps that would work with it.
  • Try using this card/envelope for a fancy invitation or birthday card.
Leave a comment if you can think of any other ideas to share with everyone for using my card/envelope.  I'd love to hear from you!
Here's the last card in the group:

Here again are all my cards for Friday night.  I think I came up with a nice variety.  Thanks for stopping by.

2 Layouts / 1 Template

For my Scraps and Prayers group, I came up with 2 layouts you can make using the same template.  We made a winter layout and a Valentine's Day layout.  Here's a little 'mini tutorial' on how I did it.
This is the winter layout, in Marina Mist and Whisper White.  I used the Snowflake Soiree stamp set for stamping the Night of Navy snowflakes.  For a final touch of elegance, I embossed (with the new Borders Scoring Plate) across the lower edge of the white strips.  (See close-up later in this post.)  Then I spritzed the entire page (each page) with a shimmer mist.  It's gorgeous in real life.

Close-up of the silver glimmer paper snowflakes for accents.
Here's the Valentine's Day layout.  I used 2 punches for all the little hearts and added our new little paper doilies behind the strips.
I stamped across the borders (under the pink strips) with the Delicate Doilies stamp set (same process as with the snowflakes in the winter layout) and added a few accents with a floral stamp from the You are Loved stamp set.
I wanted a little glimmer on this layout, too, so I spritzed just the area with the hearts and doilies with a shimmer mist.

Here's a close-up:
The shimmer mist just doesn't not show up well in a photo, but it is very pretty.  The colors I used were Rose Red, Pink Pirouette, and Regal Rose.

Here's a little 'mini tutorial' on how I did the strips and the stamping.  Enjoy!
I made 2 pencil lines straight across each piece of CS.  The lines are light, so I added arrows to point them out.  Line your CS up with your grid paper and let it be your guide for making your lines.  If your CS is at the top, left corner of your grid paper, you will start your pencil line at the 7" mark on the left, top side of the grid paper.  The lower pencil guideline is 2" below the top one.  If you can find a large, clear ruler that is 2" wide, like mine, it will make your job super simple.  Mine is one that was handed down from my mother with her sewing things.  I've used it a lot.  Look in the quilting section of a fabric store and you can probably find one.  They are longer than the 12" CS, so you can easily align both sides of your CS with your grid paper and have your lines perfectly straight every time.  I highly recommend it!
After drawing the guidelines, I stamped randomly across them in a kind of wavy motion (rather than in a straight line.)   I cut my white CS strips at 21/2" wide and then lined them up with the grid paper, starting 1/4" above the 7" line where I drew the first pencil guidelines.  This will make sure that your pencil lines are entirely covered.

Here's the close-up of the embossing --- difficult to photograph!!!
Here's a tip for using the new scoring plate:
When you get your CS positioned where you want it, (See my marker at 4" mark.) place sticky notes over the edges to help hold it in place.  Now, lay your template overlay on top and you're ready to emboss!
I hope you enjoyed my little 'mini tutorial' and will try making some templates of your own.  Tell me what you think of this idea and share your comments.  I'd love to hear from you.

2013 Calendar

Everyone finds a calendar useful and so why not make it be fun, as well?  Today's post is the beginning of a calendar I'm working on for 2013.  The pages go into 6 X 6" page protectors and hang on a cute little stand that I have.  I made a front page, too --- just for fun.
I used the numbers from the Number It stamp set and the tree is from the Forever Young stamp set for the front page.  On the January page, the snowflakes are from Snowflake Soiree.  This stamp set was in our Holiday Catalog and is still available, so you can still order it.  I embossed the snowflakes (Iridescent Ice/White EP) for added texture.  The adorable snowman is from the Snow Much Fun stamp set.  I embossed the white strip with the Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder, to give the feel of a snowstorm around him.  In my upcoming posts, I'll share more of my calendar pages with you, so check back soon to see more.

January is the time to reflect on the past year and to make resolutions for the new year.  I always resolve to eat healthy and drink more water, as well as get on my treadmill a little more.  Then, I move into my clean up/rid out stage that emerges from my inner soul at least once each year.  This is so good for my closets and my storage room.  This year, I've also resolved to continue to do my best at working on my blog, taking good care of my family and my customers, offering super fun classes, and giving myself permission to take a little more time for myself.  Some years I've resolved to not make any resolutions.  Those were easy to keep, but maybe not so productive:)  What resolutions do you make?  I'd love it if you'd share them with me and with my readers.  Maybe you'll give us some great inspiration.

I'm finishing up getting ready for my Hostess Scrapbook Club tonight.  I can't wait to share all the new products from the new Spring Catalog.  We're going to make a Valentine's Day layout and a cute little coaster calendar tonight.  I'll share those with you in another post.  After a week of being sick, it's so good to get back into my studio.  I worked in my Prairie Treasures booth today, too - cleaning up and adding some new goodies.  It's doing really well and I am excited to get busy on new projects.  So many toys / so little time:)  Leave a comment and share what you've been working on lately.  We'd love to hear all about it!

What a Fun Evening!

We had so much fun at my Hostess Scrapbook Club last night.  I gave them their surprise gift --- a personalized MDS page I designed for each of them --- and then we made a layout AND a Christmas card.  I love spoiling my ladies ('Stamping Ladies' as my grandsons refer to them).

Here's the layout we made:
The base is Soft Suede and then we added a (10" square) layer of Crumb Cake and another layer (9" square torn diagonally) of Very Vanilla.  We stamped snowflakes onto the Crumb Cake layer, using Illuminate Ink and then, using VersaMark Ink we stamped more snowflakes onto the Very Vanilla.  We embossed these with White EP and then sponged over them with Soft Suede.

To add more interest, we used a Soft Suede Marker and the Color Spritzer Tool and added a few 'splatters' and followed that up with a gentle spritzing of Frost White Shimmer Paint/alcohol mixture.

After everything dried and cooled and the layers were all attached (ribbons are tucked under the Crumb Cake layer) we added pearl accents.  It's much prettier in real life, but you can get the idea here.

This layout was inspired by this card that I designed:
For our Christmas Card, I made up more kits of a popular card, designed by Lynn in my downline.  Lynn, everyone loves your design!  I changed very little.  It's really pretty.
I hope your holiday preparations are going well.  My grandsons are enjoying the antics of Elfie and finding him in a new place each day.  He's quite a busy little guy.

I'm busy today putting in our club order (another lucky person won a free family of ink pads!  Yay!) and completing more items to add to my booth at the Root Cellar.  Somewhere in my time today, I need to order some more Christmas gifts!  So much fun... so little time:)

Playing with Pewter

Yes, I've been playing with pewter --- embossing powder, that is.  I love it!  Check it out:
I've used the same design with 3 color combinations.  The 'Noel' is from Greetings of the Season.  I've used ribbons or baker's twine in various ways, as accents on each card.  Here's some more embossing with our Pewter EP.

That's it for today.  Believe it or not, I'm working with a different 'toy' in my studio this week --- my sewing machine.  Yes!  I dusted it off, plugged it in and am busy making fun projects for Christmas gifts.  These will be on sale in my new booth which is scheduled to open on Black Friday.  If you're in downtown Decatur, stop in at the Wildflour and have a delightful lunch.  You'll probably hear a lot of busy sounds from the worker bees who are frantically trying to complete the Root Cellar in time for the grand opening.  It will be an Artisans and Antiques Mall!  My booth (Prairie Treasures) will feature hand made cards, gifts and home decor items --- all made with our Stampin' Up! products, including fabric!  I'm having a lot of fun getting ready for the big opening and can't wait to share more about it with you.  Come back soon!

Snowman and Company

I love the little snowman from the No Peeking stamp set.  He's just stinkin' cute.  Here are the results of my playing in the snow with him.
As you can see, I've used circle punches and the Boho Blossoms punch to create a wreath around the opening.  I also made a shaker card version of this snowman.  It looks just the same except that it has white mica flakes and glitter inside a little treat cup over the opening.

I stamped snowflakes onto the background, using the Snowflake Soiree stamp set and then embossed the sentiment with our gorgeous Pewter EP.  The final touches:  a beautiful Cherry Cobbler bow and Cherry Cobbler accents with Dazzling Details.  It's like a glitter glue and super easy to use, not to mention --- no loose glitter all over the place.

Come back soon for more snowman fun and lots more inspiration.  Have a great day ... and go stamp something!

Vintage Christmas... Love the Look

I love the vintage look --- textures, layers, warm neutrals --- yummy!  This card is hands down one of my favorites I've made so far this year for Christmas.

It features Very Vanilla, Crumb Cake and Soft Suede.  The snowflakes on the top layer are embossed, then sponged over lightly with Soft Suede.  Several snowflakes are highlighted with little pearls.  I sponged around the top layer, too, for added texture.  I used our new Illuminate Ink to stamp the snowflakes on the corner of the Crumb Cake layer.  It's even prettier in real life.  The crochet trim and taffeta ribbon add the finishing touches.

If you're looking for an elegant card to make, for a special someone, try a vintage Christmas card.  Your recipient will love it!  Have a great day and don't forget to vote.
